Tomorrow, May 28, TONY Award nominee Laura Osnes will return to Broadway supper club, 54 Below with her latest show, featuring the “best of” her last three solo cabaret shows in New York. A return engagement since her previous solo show there in December, the Drama Desk Award winner, known for starring roles in Grease, South Pacific, Anything Goes, Bonnie & Clyde and Cinderella is set to delight audiences with an assortment of her favorite songs and stories from past shows, concerts and cabaret performances.
#COTA’s Editor-in-Chief Steve Schonberg had an opportunity to catch up with Osnes at a recent press event and chat about her return engagement.
Schonberg: Laura! So excited to hear you’ll be back at 54 Below so soon. Tell me about the show.
Osnes: Okay, with this show we’re just keeping it basic, by focusing on the best of my packed cabaret shows. I’ve done three other solo cabaret shows in New York, so we’re creating a fourth one. We’re kind of creating a conglomeration, which is really fun.
Schonberg: So, what parts of your journey are we going to see?
Osnes: Well, we’re taking my show at the Café Carlyle from three or four years ago, and going to use some of the autobiographical aspects of that and some of my favorite songs from that and retell some of the stories here. Then a couple more [Maury] Yeston tunes that I did in concert here, and then even a couple of the songs from [my other 54 Below show], “Paths Not Taken”. We wrote fun arrangements for that show and so we’re going to bring some of them back. It’s lovely.
Schonberg: Sure, well, will we get to hear any songs from your incredible performance in [the New York City Center Encores! production of] The Band Wagon?
Osnes: Actually it’s not in our current list, but I might add a song from Band Wagon. [The show] was fun to do… Great group and it’s kind of cute material that people might be familiar with, I know they recognize a couple of songs.
I [also] have a bunch of other kind of random concerts I’m doing this summer and traveling to some master classes and for various Broadway summer workshops. Then there’s a show this fall that’s going out of town and we’re going to come to New York next year. Hasn’t been announced yet, though!
